FAQs

Can you help me choose the right type of hardwood flooring for my needs?

Absolutely! Here’s how we can help you choose the right type of hardwood flooring for your needs:

  • Understanding your lifestyle: We’ll ask questions about your household activity level, if you have pets or children, and the intended use of the room where the flooring will be installed. This helps determine the appropriate wood species based on hardness and durability.
  • Considering your design preferences: We’ll discuss the aesthetic you’re going for, whether it’s a classic, modern,or rustic look. The color, grain pattern, and plank width of the hardwood can significantly impact the overall feel of the space.
  • Matching your budget: We offer a variety of hardwood options to suit different budgets. Discussing your budget upfront allows us to recommend flooring choices that align with your financial goals.
  • Showcasing samples and discussing pros and cons: We’ll provide you with samples of different hardwood species, stains, and finishes during our in-home consultation so you can visualize them in your space. We’ll also explain the pros and cons of each option to help you make an informed decision.

What are the different types of hardwood flooring available?

Here’s a breakdown of the two main types of hardwood flooring:

Solid Hardwood Flooring:

  • Made from solid planks of wood milled directly from the tree.
  • Known for its classic beauty, natural warmth, and exceptional durability.
  • Can be sanded and refinished multiple times throughout its lifespan, potentially lasting for centuries.
  • Thicker than engineered hardwood, offering a more substantial feel underfoot.
  • Requires a stable subfloor and may expand and contract with humidity changes.
  • Generally more expensive than engineered hardwood.

Engineered Hardwood Flooring:

  • Constructed with a core of plywood or MDF topped with a real wood veneer.
  • Offers excellent stability and resists warping due to moisture fluctuations.
  • Suitable for installation on all grade levels, including basements.
  • Easier to install than solid hardwood, often featuring click-lock mechanisms.
  • Available in a wider variety of colors and finishes due to the manufacturing process.
  • Generally less expensive than solid hardwood.
  • The veneer top layer can only be sanded and refinished a limited number of times.

Ultimately, the best choice for you depends on your specific needs and priorities. Here are some additional factors to consider:

  • Subfloor type: Solid hardwood requires a flat and stable subfloor, while engineered hardwood can be installed on concrete or uneven subfloors with proper preparation.
  • Moisture exposure: If installing in moisture-prone areas like bathrooms or basements, engineered hardwood is a better choice due to its improved stability.
  • Budget: Solid hardwood is generally more expensive, while engineered hardwood offers a wider range of price points.
  • Desired aesthetic: Solid hardwood offers a timeless, classic look, while engineered hardwood provides more design flexibility with various colors and finishes.

What species of wood are best for high-traffic areas?

When it comes to high-traffic areas, choosing a hardwood species with exceptional durability is key. Here are some of the best options for withstanding heavy foot traffic:

  • Hickory: Renowned for its strength and resilience, hickory boasts a Janka Hardness rating (a measure of wood’s resistance to indentation) of around 1820, making it one of the hardest commercially available domestic woods. It can handle heavy traffic beautifully and comes with a beautiful, characterful grain pattern.

  • Red Oak: A classic choice for hardwood flooring, red oak offers a good balance between hardness (Janka rating of around 1290) and affordability. It’s readily available, comes in a variety of stain colors, and can withstand daily wear and tear well.

  • White Oak: Slightly harder than red oak (Janka rating of around 1360), white oak offers a more subtle and elegant grain pattern. It’s a popular choice for contemporary and minimalist aesthetics while holding up well in high-traffic areas.

  • Maple: Known for its smooth texture and light-colored finish, maple is another great option for high-traffic areas. While not quite as hard as hickory (Janka rating around 1450), its tight grain structure makes it resistant to scratches and dents.

  • Ash: A beautiful and light-colored wood, ash provides excellent durability with a Janka rating of around 1320. It boasts a straight, clean grain and can be stained to achieve various looks. However, ash can be susceptible to dents,so consider the specific activity level in the high-traffic area.

Here are some additional factors to consider when choosing a wood species for high-traffic areas:

  • Presence of pets: If you have pets with claws, a very hard wood like hickory might be the best choice to minimize scratches.
  • Desired aesthetics: Consider the overall style of your home and what kind of wood grain pattern and color best complements your vision.
  • Budget: Hickory tends to be more expensive than red oak or maple, so keep your budget in mind when making your final decision.

Remember, speaking with a hardwood flooring professional can be very helpful in guiding you towards the best species for your specific needs and preferences. At Floor Coverings International®, we’re happy to have a free consultation with you to discuss your goals and desires.
